Abstract

Index type-wheel machines; toy machines.-In machines in which the types are formed on a flexible band secured to the periphery of a rotary carrier, the setting-arm is adapted to be coupled to the carrier at one of a series of points, corresponding to the selected type, and to be then rotated to bring the selected type to the printing- point. A simplified machine, intended particularly for use by children in learning spelling, is shown, each type b on the band c being adapted to print a letter, and a picture representing an object of which the name begins with the letter; or word-types may be employed. The band c of rubber or the like is secured to a disc a rotatable on a pin e which is secured to a boss on the base g. For securing the band, the disc may have projections d engaging holes in the band, and a wire d<1> may be passed around the band. The disc is rotated by means of a setting-arm h which can turn on the pin e and is formed with an aperture for engaging one or other of a series of projections i on the disc. An index-plate m is secured to the disc and is provided with index characters registering with the projections. A type is brought to the printing-point by placing the setting-arm over the corresponding character on the index-plate and in engagement with the adjacent projection, and then turning the setting- arm until it is arrested by a stop g<2> on the base. Hammer - impression arrangements; papersupports; strip-guiding arrangements. - Impression is effected on a strip of paper by means of an impression-hammer p, Fig. 2, which passes through a hole in a flange n secured to the base, and is operated by pressing inwards the fingerpiece v of a rod u which is attached to the hammer and passes between guides u<1> on the base. The strip passes over a pad or platen r and is engaged by two spring-fingers t. The platen is provided with a yoke r<1> passing over a lug q on the base and secured by screws. Roller inking-arrangements. - Inking-rollers y are mounted on springs z adjustably secured to projections g<1> on the base.
