PERCY HENRY DARNLEY, 0F LONDON, ENGLAND, ASSIGNOR OCE' ONE-HALF TO BARNETT RICHARDS, OF LONDON, ENGLAND.
TYPEWRLTER;
Application iled September 23, 1921. Serial No. 502,710.
To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, PERCY HENRY .DARN- LEY, a subject of IIis Majesty the King of England, and resident of London, in the county of Middlesex and Kingdom of England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Typewriters, of which the following is a specification.
IIhis invention relates to typewriters of the kind comprising a rotatable member having a type-carrying exible band disposed aroundthe periphery thereof, the said member being adapted to be operated so as to permit the type to be moved selectively into printing position.
According to this invention the rotatable member is operated by means of a lever adapted to be connected to the said member at different points thereof in accordance with the type to be moved into printing position. The said lever may cooperate with a stop device when the selected type is in printing position, and the rotatable member may be provided with a flexible band having studies in type for the purpose hereinafter referred to.
In order that the said invention may be clearly understood and readily carried into effect the same will now be more fully described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is an elevation of a typewriter embodying the invention, the outer casing thereof being removed, the embodiment shown being adapted for use more particularly in facilitating the learning of the letters of the alphabet by children and for spelling and such purposes.
Figure `2 is a plan view corresponding to Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a similar view to Figure 2 but showing the outer casing in position, and
Figure 4 is a cross-section taken on the line m-, Figure 2.
Referring to the drawing, a denotes the rotatable member and o the type characters disposed around the periphery thereof, the type characters in the example shown being formed integral with a rubber or other exible band c detachably connected to they mounted on the shaft e and having an orifice 7L adapted to engage with any one of an annular series of pins or projections c' on the upper face of the member a, the said handle being of a resilient character in order to permit of its being connected or disconnected from the member a in the manner aforesaid. Disposed in radial alignment with said projections z' are letters corresponding to the capital letters of the alphabet, the type characters in the example shown denoting also the capital letters of the alphabet but having associated therewith type representations the spelling of the names of which commence with the alphabetical letters as shown in Figure 1. The said member a is shown formed -with openings 7' (Figures 2 and 4) at the upper face thereof whereby there are constituted radial arms merging into a central boss and into an annular rim portion Z on which the projections i are provided, the said openings being covered by a disc m detachably connected `to the said arms and bearing the alphabetical letters in radial alignment with the said projections z'. If desired, orifices or recesses may be provided in lieu of the said projections i and the lever h may be provided with a projection in lieu of the orifice 7L the said projection being adapted to engage selectively with the said orifices or recesses. Arranged concentrically with respect to the axis of the shaft e is an'annular member n, secured to the base `g and having an opening 0 therein through which the head 79 of a plunger device is adapted to be projected in order to co-operate with the band c and thereby obtain an impression of any type character or characters and/or representation or representations in alignmentrwiththe said opening 0. In order to enable an impression to be obtained an upright extension Q is `provided onlthe base 9 the said extension having associated with it a pad or plate r which may be provided with a portion r embracing the said extension, the said plate being adjustably maintained in position by means of screws, as shown, or by means of other yappropriate devices. The impression may be obtained for instance on a strip s (Figure 3) of paper or other suitable material interposed between the inner face of the pad r and preferably resilient and spaced ngers t attached at their lower ends to the said pad. As shown, the head p of the aforesaid plunger device is associated with an axially movable rod a freely mounted at diametrically opposite points on the annular portion f of the base g the said rod being bent downwardly -to clear the annular member n and being extended outwardly between guides u on the base g so as to terminate in a handle such as the upright extension o for enabling the device to be kmanipulated manually against the action of a spring fw. Rollers y to which ink is previously applied are provided for inking the type characters on the band c during the rotation of the latter with the member a. The rollers y are shown connected to spring arms e adapted to maintain the said rollers yieldably against the type characters, or representations on the band carrying the same. The said arms a are adjustably secured to upright extensions g on the base portion g, one of the said extensions being projected so as to be disposed in the path of movement of the lever L and constitute a stop g2 therefor. The said stop is so disposed that in the event of the lever L being in contact therewith and the hole 7L in the lever being engaged by one of the aforesaid pins or projections z', a type character or characters and/or representation or representations corresponding to the alphabetical letter in radial alignment with the said engaged pin or projection i will be in register with the aforesaid opening o. An enclosing casing or cover a secured to the base g is provided, the said casing having an opening o at the upper end thereof to enable the member a to be rotated and the alphabetical letters thereon to be exposed.
In the operation of the apparatus, assuming the strip s of paper or other suitable material is located at the printing point indicated in Figure 3 and the alphabetical letter G has been selected and the member a -rotated until the handle 7L makes contact with the stop g2 as shown in Figures 2 and 3, on actuating the rod u so that it is moved axially against the action of the spring w the head 79 associated with the said rod is projected through the opening 0 (Figure 4) and impinges on the resilient band Z; whereby the type character G and a type representation denoting, in `the example shown, a goose (see Figure 1) which are then in register with the said opening 0, are impressed on the-said strip s which would be held during such, action against-the pad r. By selecting other alphabetical letters in the manner aforesaid, an impression of the corresponding type characters and representations the spelling of the names of which latter commence with the selected letters, will be obtained. In the example shown on Figure l, the type characters E, F, H and l have associated therewith type representations of an egg, a fish, a harp and an ndian,. respectively.
It will be understood that other bands bearing more advanced studies in type (such i tlie said rotary member, a lever freely movable with respect to the rotary member and adapted to engage any one of the index elements, whereby to actuate the rotary member and bring a printing element to printing position, and means for operating the printing element.

5. A tvpewriter comprising a base, a mem ber rotatably mounted relatively to said base und having cireularly spaced portions on the upper face thereof. a. type-carrying flexible bend disposed around the periphery of said member, a lever freely mounted with respect to the axis of said member and havirg a part thereof adapted to engage with the said circularly spaced portions to permit the type to be moved selectively into printiner position, a yieldable plunger device mounted on said bese and adapted to act on said flexible bend, yieldably mounted inlring means carried by the said base and adapted to cooperate With said band, and an enclosing casing adapted to be secured to said base and having an opening at the upper part thereof to permit rotation of the said 1'0- tutable member.
I testimony whereof I have hereunto signed my name.
