GUIDE FOR CORRECTING TYPEWRI'TING Filed June 23, 1948 a L I,-,.& IN VENTOR.

Patented June 26, 1951 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 2 Claims.
My present invention relates to an improved guide for correcting typewriting of the type adapted to be adjustably secured upon the usual line guide of a typewriter and designed to enable the typist to position the paper in the machine with any desired part of the paper aligned to be struck by a type.
Presently it is impossible to accurately and quickly position the paper to be typed in the machine with any given spot aligned with the types and when an erasure has been made, or matter is to be added or inserted, it is necessary to exactly locate the paper so that the type will strike the desired spot.
My invention comprises an aligning device mounted on the line guide and formed with openings or transparent portions so that the spot on the paper to be typed may be exactly positioned thereunder and when the device is removed the key may be struck to imprint the character in the exact selected location.
In the accompanying drawings I have illustrated one complete example of the physical embodiment of my invention according to the best mode I have thus far devised, but it will be understood that various changes and alterations may be made in the exemplified structure within the scope of the appended claims.
In the drawings:
Fig. 1 is a partial front elevational view of a typewriter showing the device of my invention in position to align the paper.
Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the device.
Fig. 3 is a detail View in front elevation of a modified form of my invention.
Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the modified form.
Fig. 5 is a sectional View at line 55 of Fig. 3.
Fig. 6 is a perspective View of a further modified form.
Referring now to the drawings wherein I have illustrated the present preferred embodiment of my invention, I have shown a typewriter 2 having a roller or platen 4 provided with knobs 6 and the back rest 8 having indicator 1 and supporting the paper 12.
A line guide I4 is mounted on the typewriter frame above the V-guides I for the type bars, not shown.
According to my invention as shown on Figs. 1 and 2, on a lug or ear I6 on the line guide, I pivotally mount on pin IS an aligning plate 20 having apertures 22, the center one of which, when the plate 20. is swung down, indicates exactly where a type would strike. By locating the spot on the paper under this aperture, the plate may be swung up and the type will imprint the character on that spot. The end of the plate 20 is bent, as at 2|, to define a handle for manually pivoting the plate.
In Figs. 3 and 4 the plate 20 instead of being pivoted to the line guide may have an elongated slot 24 engaging the wheel 26 journaled at 28 on the line guide [4. In this form I have modified the apertures so that they constitute notches 39, the central one of which is preferably used to indicate the type-striking spot.
In Fig. 6, I have illustrated a further modified form wherein a separate device is employed comprising a plate 32 having apertures 34 and a handle 36. There is also provided a V-lug 38 which fits between the usual V-guides 15, to center the plate.
In all of the modifications the aligning plate rests on the upper edge of the line guide and it will be clear that the aligning device may quickly and easily be positioned and returned and will afford a novel means for accomplishing the de sired result.
Having thus fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a typewriter, the combination with a line guide and a vertically-disposed lug projecting upwardly from said line guide and secured thereto, of a guide plate having oneend pivotally connected to said projecting lug, there being a plurality of spaced indicating apertures arranged in said plate.
2. In a typewriter, the combination with a line guide and a vertically-disposed lug projecting upwardly from said line guide and secured thereto, of a guide plate having one end pivotally connected to said projecting lug, there being a plurality of spaced indicating apertures arranged in said plate, the other end of said plate being bent to define a handle for manually pivoting said plate.
