Cold and heat retaining vessels.-A vessel for storing liquid air or other substances is provided with two or more separate vacuum-insulated jackets or casings, the outer one forming a cover for the inner one, which extends up nearly the whole height of the outer casing, and is preferably spaced therefrom. The liquid air or other substance may be contained in a separate bottle or jar placed within the inner insulated casing, or this casing may be enamelled &c. to serve as a storage vessel. In one form the insulating casings 1, 2 are of metal, the walls being spaced and supported by heat-insulated blocks 5, 10 respectively. The walls are united at the open ends by rings 6, 11 respectively, welded to the walls and covered by rings 7, 12, of cork &c. A stopper 7a is provided for the inner casing, and the outer casing engages an upstanding threaded ring 15 carried by an insulated base 14 against which the edge of the outer casing is forced. A ring of insulating material 15<a> is placed between the inner casing and the screwed ring 15. A handle 16 pivoted to the base engages studs 17 on the outer casing to maintain it in place. Where the substance is stored in a bottle-shaped vessel the inner casing extends only to the shoulder of the bottle. The inner wall of the inner casing may be narrowed in at the neck, in which case a wide joint ring 6 is employed.
