Abstract

380,903. Vacuum jacketed vessels. LUNT, W. R. F., 339, Smith Street, Durban, Natal, South Africa. Aug. 5, 1931, No. 22179. [Class 29.] A vacuum-jacketed storage vessel comprises inner and outer cylinders of sheetmetal, preferably Staybrite steel or Monel metal, having an opening formed by a metal sleeve 6 and adapted to be closed by a stopper 11, the ends of the cylinders being oppositely dished and the inner cylinder supported by a cork segment 5. The space between the cylinders is evacuated through a valve 13 which is afterwards sealed by soldering &c., and the surfaces of the cylinders enclosing the space are either highly polished or plated. The substance to be stored in the vessel is either cooled before being placed in the vessel or, alternatively, the inner cylinder is initially cooled by means of ice &c. The stopper is either evacuated or packed with heat-insulating material, and the joints between the cylinders and the sleeve are made by welding, brazing, riveting or soldering.
