Abstract

161,897. Drury, W. Aug. 31, 1920. Air holes and chambers. -An air-tube A for a pneumstic tyre is formed with thick tread and rim portions and thin side walls a. The deflated tube is of smaller cross-section than the inside of the cover B so that the inflation stresses are borne partly by the tube. As shown in Figs. 3 and 4, the tube may be split at a<2> for the insertion of a thin tube D before final vulcanization. The tube D may be replaced by a short strip of rubber at the position of the inflating-valve. The split tube may be formed with internal beads a<3> clamped by a ring E of vulcanite, metal, or other hard material which is vulcanized in place. The ring E may be replaced by a ring of girder sections with a perforated web. A metal socket may be embedded in the tube for the passage of the valve-stem. To prevent creeping, the tread surface of the tube may be formed with suction recesses a<4>, Fig. 3.
