Jan. 20, 1920 File-cutting.-In a file-cutting machine, the file bed B is traversed at a constant speed by means of a screw C driven by bevel-gearing e<1> from the driving-shaft E, and the pitch of the cuts if varied by varying the speed of the tool-carrier D The latter is operated by a cam d on a spindle d<2> carrying a sprocket-wheel driven by a chain from a sprocket H loose on a countershaft G. Alternatively, the sprocket-wheels and chain may be replaced by spur-wheels. The boss of the sprocketwheel or spur-wheel H is screwed to receive a changeable pulley K, driven by a belt from a changeable pulley K<1> on the driving-shaft E. The pulleys K, K' are preferably of wood. The force of the blow is varied by means of a screw M acting on a spring d<1>. The force of the blow is alsc varied automatically at the ends of the file, by a cam P on the file bed acting on a lever n, pivoted to the frame, and connected bv a link n' to a lever N. The latter acts on a sleeve m, slidable in the boss of a yoke m<1>, and forming the nut of the screw M.
