Turning-gear.-In an electric or other starter in which an intermediate pinion is moved automatically by inertia about the shaft of the starting- motor into engagement with an engine member, an idly mounted inertia wheel is in permanent engagement with the intermediate pinion in order to effect the automatic movement. In one form, Figs. 1 and 2, a shaft 14 is rotatable in arms 12, 13 adapted to swing about the axis of the starting-motor, and carries a pinion 15 driven by a pinion 18 on the armature shaft 6 and a pinion 16 adapted to engage an engine member 2. An inertia wheel 8 is idly mounted on the bearing 7 and has internal teeth in engagement with the pinion 15. When the motor 1 is started, the inertia of the wheel 8 causes the arms 12, 13 to swing about the shaft 6 and to bring the pinion 16 into driving engagement with the engine member 2. When the engine over-runs the motor, the pinion 16 is swung automatically out of gear. The parts are held in or out of engagement by a spring 19 connected to pins 20, 21 on the arm 12 and on a bracket 10 on which the arm is pivoted at 23. The swing of the arms 12, 13 is linked by a screw 22 engaging a slot in the pivct 23. In a modification, the inertia wheel has a toothed hub engaged by an additional pinion on the shaft 14.
