Vacuum or low-pressure apparatus, arrangements of; frequency, changing.-In thermionic valve apparatus for converting continuous current into low frequency alternating current, six anodes a<1> are connected in pairs through the reversely wound windings S', S" of transformers with a neutral O. A calihode C, heated by an internal resistance, and the neutral are connected with a sumpply X, Y of continuous current. Six grids g<1> are connected with brushes f<1> bearing on a commutator consisting of three pairs of half-rings d<1> - - d<6>, the insulation between each pair being spaced at intervals of 120‹ in successive planes. Two rings B, B<1>, to which brushes F, F<1> are applied, are connected in series with three half-rings d<1>, d<2>, d<3>, and d<4>, d<5>, d<6>, respectively. The brush F is connected with the positive terminal of a battery K, and the brush F<1> with the negative terminal of a battery K<1>. The commutator is driven by a motor at a speed equal to the desired frequency, the grids being thereby connected in turn, so that three-phase current is produced in the secondary windings T' of the transformers. In a similar arrangement for use as a three-phase rectifier, the grids, commutator and batteries K, K<1> are omitted. A generator as shown may be used with a rectifier for frequency changing.
