Commutator switching - arrangements. - In apparatus for converting polyphase currents into continuous currents, or vice versa, of the kind described in Specification 169,694, the polyphase apparatus is provided with n groups of polyphase windings arranged at angles of 2 #/n to one another, and the commutator is provided with n groups of brushes, each group connected to the terminals of one of the polyphase windings. In the arrangement shown, two groups of three-phase windings a - c c and d - - f are arranged at 60‹ to each other and connected to two groups of brushes a<1> - - c<1>, d<1> - - f<1>, the three brushes in each group being placed at 120‹ from each other. In a modification, three groups of windings at 40‹ and three groups of brushes are provided, and the number of groups may be further increased in order to eliminate undulations on the continuouscurrent side. The third harmonic current and its multiples are automatically eliminated by the arrangement, and other harmonics may be reduced by providing leakage reactance in the polyphase windings or by inserting reactance coils in the various phases.
