Abstract

160,976. Whitworth, I. Jan. 13, 1920. Thrust bearings.-In a multi-collar thrust bearing having circumferential series of pivoted or flexibly supported pads 29, the load is distributed between the several shaft collars 25, 26 by rocking members 30 each having a spherical surface 30<b> bearing against a spherically seated ring 31, and spherical ends 30<a> bearing against a pad 29 and against a cage member 23, which has a spherical mounting 37 in the casing of the bearing. The bearing shown is arranged to take thrusts in both directions, the inner rows of pads 28 bearing directly against the cage 23. As applied to a bearing having horseshoe-shaped bearing bearing-blocks carrying pivoted pads, the blocks have axial extensions on each side of the shaft, enabling them to transmit the load to rocking-members. Two blocks bear against a rocking member which bears against a second rocking- member supporting at its other end a third block, and so on according to the number of shaft collars, different sets of collars being used for ahead and astern thrusts. The rocking-members are pivoted asymmetrically to allow for the different loads on the two ends, and the end ones of the series bear against spherically-seated bearing-rings adjusted axially by screws.
