Abstract

156,327. Boberton, C. G. Oct. 6, 1919. Thrust bearings.-In a thrust bearing of the pivoted-block type, each block or pad D bears flat against a thrust ring B on the shaft A, and has a spherical rear surface, d<1> which is supported at either three or four points distributed around the centre of the block, the support at two points at least being upon balls, to allow angular freedom of the pads. In Figs. 1 and 4, each block is shown supported at three points, two being on balls E and the other on the sloping surface c<1> of a channel c in a fixed member C. A stop F, adjustably screwed into the member C, prevents side displacement of the balls and pads, and mav replace one of the balls. As shown in Fig. 4, the slight play of the balls permits the pads D to open slightly at the entrance edge of their bearing-surfaces d to facilitate the entry of oil. In order to take thrust in both directions, the collar B may have pads and balls arranged on each side; or a pair of thrust collars may be used, encircling a fixed member provided with pads and balls on each side. In a modification, the spherical surfaces of the pads D, Fig. 7, are supported at four points by means of two rings of balls E, E<1>. Clips G may be used to retain the collar B in place in the bearing.
