Abstract

160,271. Stone & Co., Ltd., J., Cotter, E. W., and Troughton, E. Dec. 17, 1919. Holders for sliding windows.-In window sashes balanced one against the other by racks and pinions, means are provided to allow limited opening of one sash without disturbing the other. The pinion f, Fig. 6, is carried on a stub axle o in a lever r pivoted on a pin working in a slot t; on raising the lever r, the rack d is lowered by an amount corresponding to the fall of the pinion and an additional amount due to the rotation of the pinion on the rank e. In one modification, Fig. 7, the pinion is mounted on a pin sliding in a slotted link w which is operated by a lever pivoted thereto on a hollow pin 2 and having two angled flats 5 engaging the flat 4 of the link. The pin 2 is cut away on one side to allow the axle o to enter the end of the slot. In a second modification, Fig. 9, the lever has a pin sliding in a vertically slotted plate provided with two recesses 11<a>, 11<b> for the closed and partially opened positions of the window. The axle of the pinion may also be carried and operated by an eccentric pivoted in a slotted plate and operated by a key &c. Means may be provided to allow one sash to be completely opened without disturbing the other. A train of three pinions 19, 20, 21, Fig. 15, carried by a plate 22 is operated by the lever 24 in the manner described to open one sash partially, The plate 22 is housed in a cam-slot in a sliding plate 27, which is operated by a lever 26 pivoted at 25 having a pin-and-slot connection with the cam plate. By depressing the lever 26 the pinion 21 is swung out of engagement with its rack and the two pinions 19, 20 are engaged with the other rack which is thereby looked. The lever 26 may be locked to the frame by a clip. The sashes are held in any position by clamping screws l, Fig. 2, working in nuts m in the frame and bearing on the parting-bead g with metal bearing-plates n sunk therein if made of wood. Hand grips on the lower sash, and a jointing-ring against which the sash is pressed when closed may be provided, and the meeting rails of top and bottom sash may be bevelled so that the sashes are pressed against the frame when closed. The pinion f may be replaced by two rigidly connected pinions of different diameters to give a larger movement to one sash and to balance unequally weighted sashes. A double pinion is also provided for opening a ventilator sash, the smaller pinion meshing with a fixed rack and the larger one with the sash.
