Description
A. E. STROM 4 March 16, 1937.
LATCH FOR WINDOW OPERATORS Filed Sept. 19, 1935 @gua Patented Mar. 16, 1937 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICEv 1 Claim.
This invention relates to a window construction and it aims to provide means whereby the sashes are slidably mounted with the elimination of weights, cords, pulleys and hardware such as is used at present ondouble hung sashes.
from the cost of the parts mentioned, the cost of window frames is likewise reduced inasmuch as pockets therein are not required.
It is further aimed to provide such a construction which will eliminate weather-stripping, rattling of Windows, render the Window burglarproof in closed position, and cause one sash to raise as the other lowers, through movement of the other.
The more specific objects and advantages will become apparent from a considerationof the description following taken in connection with accompanying drawing illustrating an Operative embodiment. 1
In said drawing:-
Figure 1 is a view of an improved window construction according to the invention in front elevation, partly broken away;
Figure 2 is an enlarged vertical sectional view taken on the line 2-2 of Figure 1;
Figure 3 is a horizontal sectional view taken substantially on the line 3-3 of Figure 1 Figure 4 is a horizontal sectional View taken on the line 4-4 of Figure l; and
Figure 5 is a horizontal sectional'view taken on the line 5--5 of Figure 4.
Referring specifically to the drawing, I designates a conventional window frame in which a pair of relatively slidable sashes II are mounted by usual stops or otherwise as at I2, such sashes carrying lights I3.
Countersunk in the inner surfaces of the side Stiles or uprights I4 of the window frame Ill are plates I5, the same having flanges I6 through which screws or other fastenings I1 are passed to secure the plates in place. Journaled in said plates I5 is a rotatable shaft I8 which is disposed between the meeting rails of the sashes I I. Keyed to such shaft I8 are pinions I9 enmeshed with rack bars 20 screwed or otherwise secured as at 2| to the sashes. Obviously, the rack bars 29 may be made of cast metal or rolled, or otherwise as preferred, and the pinions I9 may be made of any suitable material such as cast iron, copper,
steel, fibre, brass, aluminum, or bakelite.
As a result of the construction described, one sash will raise as the other sash lowers, upon Aside sliding either sash,` thus simultaneously opening the window at the top and bottom, Or simultaneously closing them at the top and bottom. Y
The sashes are ordinarily locked against movement in closed position and in any of the 5 open positions Vthrough the engagement of a latch 22 between teeth of one of the pinions I9. Such latch is preferably pivoted as at 23 within a slot 24 of one of the plates I5. A leaf spring 25 fastened to the last mentioned plate as at 26, 1o is engaged with one end of the latch 22 to prevent displacement thereof and urge closing movement.
Said latch 22, however, may be raised or disengaged from the adjacent pinion I9 in order to 15 permit the sashes to slide and to this end an operating rod 2l is slidably mounted in the last mentioned plate I5 in a recess 28 thereof as well as slidably mounted through the adjacent part of the frame I0. Operator or rod 21 has a knob 20 29 at one end thereof and at its other end has a cam 30. When the rod 2l is pulled forward the cam 30 through engagement with the latch 22, elevates such latch out of engagement with the pinion I 9, and holds it in that position so that 25 the sashes may be adjusted. The rod 21, however, after adjustment is adapted to be pushed inwardly, thus moving the cam 3l) from beneath the latch 22 and the latter reengaging the pinion I9 through the urgency of the spring 25. 30
Various changes may be resorted to, provided they fall within the spirit and scope of the invention.
In combination with a window-operator shaft 35 having a pinion thereon, a plate disposed in parallelism to the pinion and in which one end of said shaft is journaled, said plate having a slot extending therethrough, a latch in said slot engageable between the teeth of said pinion, means 40 pivoting the latch to the plate, a spring leaf secured to one side of the plate crossing said slot and engaging one end of the latch to urge the latch into engagement with said pinion, said plate having a slot therethrough disposed at a 45 right-angle to the rst mentioned slot and opening at the base of the latter, and an operating memberv operable in the second mentioned slot having a cam engageable with the latch to disengage the latter from the pinion. 50
