159,361. Canton, A. A. Dec. 10, 1919. Fan apparatus. - A fan operated by an electric motor drives a current of air in a series of impulses over an electrically-heated element. The fan 3 is carried by the motor spindle and is supported in a casing 4 with an open face and with segmental slots 5 in the other face. The spindle also carries the shutter 10 which has slots 11 similar in size and position to the slots 5. A conical split sleeve 12 on the shutter is held by friction on a cone 13 on the motor spindle. The heating- element consists of resistance wire 6 mounted on rods 7 carried by a rectangular frame 8 which is slipped into the open end of the casing and protected by a guard 9. Separate leads supply the fan motor and the heating-resistance; the motor speed is varied by means of the switch 17 and the heating-current by the switch 15. When the slots 11 register with the slots 5, a large current of air passes, but when the slots do not register this current will be materially reduced. By moving the shutter 10 along the shaft and so varying the friction grip, the speed of the shutter relative to the fan may be altered.
