Abstract

1382047 Thermal storage heaters BRITISH DOMESTIC APPLIANCES Ltd 28 June 1972 [30 June 1971] 30746/71 Heading F4U [Also in Divisions H2 and G3] The temperature of a room is maintained at a desired value by an electric storage heater the output of which, is adjusted by adjusting the speed of a fan motor (e.g. a shaded pole induction motor) 14 (Figs. 1 and 2) thereof in dependence upon the temperature of air flow at the air inlet 15 of the heater and sensed by a sensor 17, e.g. an N.T.C. thermistor. The motor speed is controlled by a circuit Fig. 2, which changes the RMS value of the motor input voltage by varying the firing angle of an S.C. Rectifier Th in a diode switching bridge 21, in dependence upon the resistance of thermistor 17. The desired temperature may be pre-set on a resistor RV1. If the sensed temperature exceeds a predetermined value the SCR will not receive firing pulses and the fan will be stopped, only a minimal control circuit current flowing in the motor. In operation, a capacitor C1 is charged initially at a high rate via R4, D1, to a certain value, and then at a lower rate via R3. A ramp and pedestal waveform is thereby produced at the emitter of a transistor TR1. The base voltage of TR1 is dependent upon the resistance of sensor 17. When the potential at its emitter sufficiently exceeds that of its base, TR1 conducts, turning on TR2 which in turn renders TR1 more conductive and the pair saturate rapidly. C1 then discharges via TR1 and TR2 to turn ON the SCR. The control circuit power supply now collapses and the process is repeated in the next half cycle of the supply. If the motor is highly inductive it may be shunted by a resistor and capacitor, unit A so as to ensure that the SCR current exceeds its holding current value throughout the supply voltage half cycle when it is required to conduct. R7 is for linearizing thermistor 17.
