Abstract

1,174,561. Control systems for heating resistors. SATCHWELL CONTROLS Ltd. 26 Jan., 1967 [8 Feb., 1966; 27 June, 1966], Nos. 5555/66 and 28766/66. Heading H2H. [Also in Division G3] An A.C. conducting electronic switch 41 energizes a load 42 for periods controlled by a resistor 61, which varies the time taken by each pulse of the unsmoothed output of a full wave rectifier bridge 16 to charge a capacitor 37 to a voltage at which a unijunction transistor 39 is switched on to produce a pulse in a transformer 40a-40b controlling the switch 41. The switch 41, which may be a bi-directional triode semi-conductor switch, thus energizes the heater 42 for that fraction of each cycle of the supply voltage which is necessary to produce the desired heating effect. In an arrangement controlling the temperature of a saucepan a thermistor (22, Fig. 2, not shown) is spring loaded against the pan to sense its temperature and is connected in a bridge comprising resistors (24-27), a desired temperature present potentiometer (31), and an unbalance sensing transistor (30). The collector voltage of the transistor (30) controls the conduction of the transistor (34) which charges the capacitor (37), the remainder of the circuit being as in Fig. 6. One arm of the bridge may be shunted by an ambient temperature compensating combination of a fixed resistor (28) and a temperature dependent resistor (29). The arrangement may also control oven temperature. In further alternatives (Figs. 5, 7, not shown), the semi-conductor bidirectional switch 41 is replaced by a full wave rectifier bridge with a silicon controlled rectifier (60) across a diagonal.
