Abstract

158,582. Wilson, F. E., Shepherd, W. A., and Powell & Hanmer, Ltd. March 6, 1919. Clutches, friction. - In overload - release friction clutches of the kind described in Specification 19900/14, in which the driven clutch part is connected to its shaft by a spring conveying the normal load without flexure, the driven clutch part a is connected with a sleeve b which is secured to the driven shaft c, by balls d engaging helical grooves in the clutch part and sleeve. When overload occurs, the spring allows relative movement between the parts a, b, and the clutch slips. The invention is applicable to electric motor-generator plant for starting and lighting motor vehicles, the shafts e<1>, c being connected to the engine and the electrical unit respectively.
