Abstract

157,692. Tutt, M. W., and Hulburd Engineering Co., Ltd. July 6, 1920. Valveless pumps. - Relates to valveless pumps and consists in employing two pistons in one cylinder, the inner piston reciprocating continuously and the outer piston being held d stationary during the suction and delivery strokes of the inner piston, and being moved with, and by, the inner piston, or its rod, to transfer the charge from the inlet to the delivery port and to return the two pistons ready for another suction stroke. Fig. 1 shows a pump with the pistons at the commencement of a suction stroke. As the piston b descends, the piston a is held by a cam k acting on the roller j until the piston b has completed its suction stroke. The cam then disengages the roller and the boss d of the crosshead h bears on the piston a, so that both pistons descend to bring the charge, which has entered through the inlet e, opposite the delivery port f. The cam l now engages with the roller and holds the piston a, while the piston b rises to deliver the charge through the port f. As the cam disengages the roller, the piston b comes in contact with the other and the two rise together into the positions shown. Fig. 6 shows a modification in which there are two pairs of parallel cylinders, each containing one continuously-moving piston b and two intermittently-moving pistons a all actuated and controlled by a single cross-head h and one cam-plate m. As shown, the arrangement constitutes eight single-acting pumps, but by coupling up the suction ports e, and the delivery ports f of each cylinder, the equivalent of four double-acting pumps is got.
