Abstract

Folding transversely; measuring.-A device for holding the ends of layers of cloth during the laying and the cutting operations consists of a weighted or spring-loaded swinging arm which engages with successive plies of cloth and is so arranged that at each full swing it operates a tallying device, means being provided for moving the arm through less than its full extent without actuating the tally. Fig. 1 shows one of a pair of arms 14 pivoted at 17 and carrying between them a beam 16 fitted with sharp-pointed spring plungers 22 having rubber tips 24 for bearing on the cloth. The pivots 17 are supported on a frame 11 clamped to the table. A spring catch 35 bears on a boss 31 having notches 32, 33. A short crank 47 on the arm 14 is connected by a link 48 with a lever 46 of a counter 45. Each time that the arm 14 is raised until it is vertical and the latch 35 locks in the notch 33, the counter is operated, but a slot in the link 48 enables the arm to be raised to be locked in the notch 32 without actuating the counter. The latch 35 is withdrawn by a lever grasped by the operator at the same time as the arm 14, when he desires to lower the arm on to the cloth.
