Abstract

156,556. Loth, A. W., and George, H. Feb. 10, 1917, [Convention date]. Projectile fuzes.-Relates to fuzes which explode the projectile when centrifugal force set up by the rotation of the projectile ceases, and comprises arrangements in which the primer and the striker are brought into contact to cause detonation, when the projectile has ceased to rotate, by a spring which is normally held cocked. In the construction shown in Fig. 1, the primercarrier A is acted upon by a spring D which is held under compression by blades E, E', carrying pellets F, F<1>, normally abutting against a shoulder G. On discharge of the projectile, the member A sets back, disengaging the pellets F, F<1> from catches g, g', whereupon the pellets fly out, and when acceleration ceases they move up against a rim H. When centrifugal force diminishes sufficiently, they pass into a, space J, and the spring D is then free to move the primer into contact with a fixed striker C. The fuze described above may be combined with an ordinary time-fuze. In a modification, the primercarrier is normally held back, against the action of a spring, by the rear ends of arms which are pivoted near the front end of the fuze body, and which are subject to centrifugal action. Figs. 3 and 4 show modifications in which the axis of the fuze is perpendicular to that of the projectile. In the construction shown in Fig. 3, blade springs Q, Q' normally hold the striker-spring P cocked, and move out into grooves R, R<1> under centrifugal action. The fuze shown in Fig. 4 is a combined time and percussion fuze, in which a spring T is under torsional and compressive stress. On discharge, a pellet U moves along a rod y<1> until it clears a shoulder y<2>; the spring T then causes the pellet to rotate and strike a cap y<3>, igniting a time-fuze. When centrifugal force ceases, the pellet U escapes through a space y<4>, and the spring uncoils further and causes the pellet to explode a percussion cap, (not shown).
