Abstract

154,571. Bouteille, E. Nov. 26, 1919, [Convention date]. Electro-magnetic switches.-In a switch, having shunt and series operating coils, for connecting a battery automatically to a dynamo when its voltage is adequate for charging, the shunt coil is shunted by a resistance when the circuit is closed, thereby reducing the current therein and rendering the switch more sensitive to reductions in the current in the series coil. The switch is so arranged that, when in the open position, the battery is completely disconnected from the dynamo. As shown in the figure, the armature carries main bridging contacts 8, 9 and flexible sparking contacts 10, 11 co-operating with fixed contacts 6, 7. The shunt coil 3 in series with the adjusting resistances 13 first closes the switch when the dynamo voltage reaches a certain value, and; when closed, the switch is maintained closed against the action of a spring by the main series current through the coil 4 and by the shunt current in the coil 3 reduced by the shunt resistance 14 introduced when the contacts 6, 10 come into engagement. The flexible sparking contacts ensure that the armature is withdrawn a substantial distance from the magnets before the full current in the shunt coil is restored, thereby preventing hunting of the armature.
