Abstract

20,168. Brettell, F. G., [Apple Electric Co.]. April 25. Electro-magnetic switches.-The cut-in ' and ' cut-out ' of a variable-speed generator is provided with a fine winding adapted to be connected in series with a coarse winding when the switch is in its ' off ' position, while the fine winding is placed across the dynamo and finally disconnected when the switch is operated. The switch may be provided with an indicator of the kind described in Specification 10,251/14. In the arrangement shown, the coarse winding 37 is connected in series with the fine winding 51 across the terminals of a dynamo 48 when this is disconnected from the battery 47 and lamp circuit 56. When the dynamo voltage reaches a pre-determined value, the armature 30 carrying a contact 31 is operated to connect the dynamo to the lamp and battery circuit through a contact 36, while the circuit of the coil 51 is maintained through a contact 52 by means of a member 62 loosely connected to the armature 30 by means of a screw 63. A further movement of the armature 30 breaks the circuit of the winding 51, sparking being prevented by means of a resistance 59, and the switch being held in its closed position by means of the series winding 37.
