Abstract

10,251. Brettell, F. G., [Apple Electric Co.]. April 25. Electro-magnetic switches, with high and low resistance windings, used in dynamo-battery systems for motor-car lighting. Current flows from the shunt machine 48 through the lowresistance winding of the magnet 33 to the core and thence by the wire 39 and spring 62 to the contacts 52 and high-resistance winding 51. When the dynamo voltage is sufficient, the charging-circuit is closed at 31, 36, the contact at 62, 52 being opened after the said charging-circuit is closed. A non-inductive resistance 59 is shunted across the high resistance winding to prevent sparking at the contacts 62, 52. If the battery should inadvertently be connected up with wrong polarity, the polarity of the dynamo will reverse when it is thrown on the cells, and the switch will open momentarily and then close again, and the charging will proceed as if the connexion had not been wrongly made. An indicator of special construction is operated by the armature to show the position of the switch.
