Vaporizers, external.-The charge is produced by drawing a flame or hot flame products by engine suction over a liquid-fuel supplying-device in the substantial absence of air, and afterwards admixing with air. As shown, the engine intake passage is fitted with a suction-operated burner 12, the flame, or the combustion products, being drawn over a fuel nozzle 8, air being afterwards admitted through a suction-actuated valve 7. The burner comprises a fuel nozzle 14, Figs. 1 and 3, supplied with fuel from a receptacle 9 and with air through passage 10', a sparking-device 17 or the like, and a chamber 16 provided with holes through which air admitted by a suction-actuated valve 13 enters to support combustion. Radiating fins 10 are provided on the nozzle 8 to protect the fuel receptacle 9 from the heat. The apparatus may be made more compact by arranging the sections 3, 4, 5 of the intake passage as a coil. The flame may be extinguished when the engine is warmed up, the mixture being heated, if necessary, by an exhaust or water jacket. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 105.606.
