Abstract

1537055 Curing sheet edges; dies MANNESMANN AG 17 Nov 1975 [23 Nov 1974] 47309/75 Heading B3E The edge of a metal sheet which is to be bent to cylindrical form is pre-bent between a concave die 3 and one of a set of convex dies 2a ... 2d, the chosen convex die and the concave die being so disposed that the space between them decreases towards the edge of the sheet. Fig. 1 shows a section through the concave die 3, and four convex dies 2a ... 2d, the operative surfaces 6, 4a ... 4d of which are marked in terms of inclination of the tangent to the horizontal at 40 degrees, 35 degrees, and 25 degrees. Each curve 4a ... 4d is an involute of an equilateral polygon, and the convex die is chosen and aligned with the concave die depending on the radius and extent of curvature required so as to leave a gap 7. The workpiece 1 and dies as shown give the minimum curvature, and curve the sheet edge to a total deflection of 34 degrees. Fig. 2 is a section through a suitable press comprising a longitudinal 19 and a plurality of transverse cheeks 20 dividing the press into bays, in each of which is an adjustable die holder 12 driven by a respective nut 14 and a single common worm 15, a press cylinder 16 acting on a single press beam 10, and a work holder 17, 18.
