Abstract
1489257 Bending sheet metal NIPPON KOKAN KK and T NAKAGAWA 24 Dec 1974 [27 Dec 1973] 55788/74 Heading B3E That part of a workpiece 14 which is deformed during bending is subjected during bending to a compressive stress in the direction of its thickness, the stress being applied on the tension side in the region of plastic deformation. In Fig. 12, the descent of a die 11 under force Fb is opposed by a counter die 13 subject to a pneumatically or hydraulically generated opposing force to produce a counter-pressure Fc, whereby as the work is bent about die 11 by rollers 16a, 16b, it is subject to compression at the bend 15. The distance Do-2 between the lines of action of the rollers, either at the finish of bending as shown, or at the start when the work is laid across the rollers, should be between 3À5 and 6 times the thickness of the workpiece. The upper surface of the counter die may be flat, concave, or convex, and be curved, or V-shaped. Cracking of the workpiece and various defects of shape in the bend are stated to be avoided.
