Abstract

1536590 Faujasite treatment W R GRACE & CO 17 June 1976 25219/76 Heading C1A A faujasite is treated to improve its heat and steam solubility by (a) treating a faujasite having a SiO 2 : Al 2 O 3 molar ratio of at least 3À5 to ionexchange with hydrogen ions or cations which thermally decompose to leave hydrogen ions, until the alkali-metal content (expressed as oxide) is less than 1 wt. per cent; (b) calcining the exchanged zeolite and then (c) introducing non- alkali metal cations by exchange at pH 1.5 to 3.5. Preferably step (a) comprises initially exchanging to an alkali-metal content of 1-4 wt. per cent, calcining at 1300-1500‹ F., then further exchanging to below 1 wt. per cent, the faujasite then being separated, washed and dried. Preferably in step (c) 1-6 wt. per cent (calculated as oxide) of rare-earth, Ca, Mg, Co, Ni, Cu and/or iron is incorporated. The treated faujasite may be mixed with 50-95 wt. per cent (based on final composition) of an inorganic oxide matrix (e.g. silica-alumina plus kaolin clay) and used as a catalyst for cracking hydrocarbons.
