Abstract
PURPOSE:To obtain colloidal silica having a small particle size and maintaining stability over a long period even in the absence of alkali ions by subjecting an aq. sodium silicate soln. to ion exchange treatment, adding sodium aluminate to the resulting active silicic acid soln. in specified two stages and treating the soln. CONSTITUTION:An aq. sodium silicate soln. is subjected to ion exchange treatment to prepare an active silicic acid soln. Sodium aluminate is added to the silicic acid soln. so that the amt. of Al2O3 is regulated to 0.3-1.5% of the amt. of SiO2, and the soln. is adjusted to pH8-10 and heated to form colloidal silica having <=10nm particle size. Sodium aluminate is then added to the colloidal silica soln. so that the amt. of Al2O3 is regulated to 3/D-15/D% (D is the particle size of the silica) of the amt. of SiO2. Thus, stable colloidal silica suitable for a catalyst, paint, etc., is obtd.
