Abstract

1,161,816. Molecular sieves. UNIVERSAL OIL PRODUCTS CO. 12 Dec., 1966, No. 55476/66. Heading C1A. [Also in Division C5] Shaped particles of silica or silica-alumina, preferably calcined, are first aged with a solution containing sodium cations and anions selected from hydroxyl, silicate and aluminate and then further aged, after the addition to sufficient sodium hydroxide to bring the mole ratio of sodium to silicon in the total mixture to between 0. 6 and 3, until a portion of the shaped particles is converted to a zeolite containing the faujasite structure and retaining the size and shape of the original particles. The first ageing step may be carried out at a Na to Al mole ratio between 1 and 1.6 for 1-48 hours at 20-120‹ C. in a treating solution containing both sodium aluminate and hydroxide. The second ageing step may be carried out at 40-120‹ C. for 5- 100 hours. The zeolite products having a Si to Al mole ratio between 1 and 3, a substantial proportion of pores of 6 to 15 Angstroms, and an X-ray diffraction pattern such as shown at Example 1. Catalyst carriers having areas of high electric charge are made by (a) decationizing the zeolite by ion exchange of the sodium with ammonium ion and heating at 425- 575‹ C. to remove the ammonium ion, thereby leaving up to 90% of the aluminium containing tetrahedra no longer associated with sodium or ammonium ions, or (b) ion exchanging the Na with divalent Ca, Mg or Be cations to displace at least 30-50% of the sodium cations. In Example 2 a combination of both methods (a) and (b) is used.
