Abstract

1533979 Thermally conditioning glass PILKINGTON BROS Ltd 21 Jan 1976 [31 Jan 1975] 4359/75 Heading C1M Molten glass passing from a refining zone 14 to a shaping operation is thermally conditioned in zone 15 to render it suitable for the shaping, there being no return flow in conditioning zone 15 (due to zone 15 being shallower than refining zone 14), the glass being conditioned by selective cooling at or near the inlet to zone 15 so that the passage through zone 15 completes the conditioning and provides a desired temperature profile. The selective cooling may be by fluid-cooled pipes 30 immersed in the melt and by similar pipes 26 located at the inlet (27) to zone 15. The position of the fluid-cooled pipes may be adjusted in response to the temperature profiles obtained by monitoring thermocouples 35 to achieve the desired profile. Fluid-cooled stiners 22 may also be provided, either in the forwardflowing glass in the refining zone (as shown) or in the zone 15 (Figs. 4 and 5, not shown).
