Abstract

1530151 Frequency detection GENERAL ELECTRIC CO Ltd 12 Jan 1976 [10 Jan 1975] 1104/75 Heading G4H [Also in Division H3] A frequency discriminator suitable for detecting signals selectively at one of two frequencies comprises a multi-stage shift register 1 to which is applied an input signal having positive and negative portions represented by respective trains of like binary digits, an arrangement 3 for stepping the digits along the register 1 at a higher rate, two detectors 6, 13 connected to the register 1 and spaced apart by a distance corresponding to half the period of the input centre frequency, each for detecting a transition between the two type of trains and an arrangement 19-51, e.g. a bistable-logic gate circuitry, responsive to the detector outputs for providing a pulse output which varies in pulse duration and/or pulse repetition rate in accordance with the deviation of the input signal from its centre frequency. The pulse output may be applied (Fig. 2, not shown) via a gating circuit to a low pass filter and a zero-crossing detector to obtain an analogue output. A NAND gate 20 prevents an output being produced when the input signal is at the centre frequency. An output is provided at terminal 52 or 53 in dependence upon whether the instantaneous frequency is below or above the centre frequency. In operation, the bistable circuit 27 is set and reset by the output of a corresponding one of the detectors 6, 13 so that the output of 27 has a duration and a repetition rate dependent on the amount of deviation from the centre frequency.
