Abstract

152,717. Valda, A. H. June 19, 1919. Hydroplane vessels.-Ships and boats are fitted above a structure comprising a series of planing surfaces so formed and arranged as to be open above and to leave between the rear edge of one planing surface and the forward edge of the one next behind, an open space whereby water can pass both above and below said surfaces. The hull a of the vessel, shaped according to requirements, is mounted on a lower frame a<1> extending for its entire length, and of a slightly greater width. The base of the frame is constituted by a number of planing surfaces b arranged with an open space b<1> between each surface. The forward end may be formed as an ordinary bow, and provided with a screw propeller e protected by a dependent guard c<2>. Both forward and aft screws e, e<1> are driven from the same internal-combustion engine f, the shafts having clutches controlled bv hand levers. According to the speed attained, the vessel will be navigated with its planes b either just beneath the waves or skimming the surface. In a modification, the planes are placed further apart and are made hollow for the admission of water to adjust the degree of immersion. Valves may also be fitted to control the passage of water between the planing surfaces. The forward propeller may rotate in a mixture of air and water, air being supplied through a vertical conduit. The deck may also be formed of hollow cylinders supported on hollow columns.
