Abstract

1524830 Apparatus for producing stationary interference fringes BRITISH AIRCRAFT CORP Ltd 19 Oct 1976 [24 Oct 1975] 43696/75 Heading G2J [Also in Division H4] Apparatus for producing a stationary interference pattern of fringes comprises a coherent light source 11, means 13-15 for extending a light beam 10 therefrom a predetermined amount in one direction normal to the axis of the beam, means 16 to convert the beam into at least three substantially parallel beams 18, and means 19 to focus these beams down to a line of interference fringes or spots 20. The apparatus may comprise cylindrical lenses 13, 14 (or alternatively an astigmatic lens) and a collimating lens 15 to produce the extended beam 12, a beam-splitter 16 and a Fourier lens 19. The beamsplitter may be a glass slab having aluminium coatings 17a (which totally reflects light incident from within the beam-splitter) and 17b (having varying transmission/reflection properties such that beams 18' are of equal intensity); alternatively a slotted mask or a series of plates may be used. It is stated that this arrangement produces a probe volume of smaller dimensions and provides fringes of increased contrast compared with the conventional two-beam anemometer. Light scattered by particles crossing the fringe pattern may be detected by means of a focusing lens and a photo-multiplier tube. The signal-tonoise ratio may be increased by controlled seeding of the flow with aerosol particles, and by providing a mask having an aperture in the shape of the probe volume placed in the image plane of the lens.
