Abstract

1523916 Feeding sheets XEROX CORP 24 Oct 1975 43921/75 Heading B8R A pile 14, from which sheets 16 are separated from the bottom by a friction belt 32 co-operating with a retard pad 35, is pressed downwards with a variable pressure by a plate 20. A pivoted pressure arm 22 carrying a roller 23 is held in a lower position by a processing- machine cover member 42, in which position a bridging plate 44 connecting two spaced arm members of the arm 22 exerts a force on the plate 20 through a compression spring 24, the pressure being proportional to the height of the pile. When the cover is raised, a torsion spring raises the arm to release the pressure. The plate 20 is cut out to accommodate the belt 32 and pad 35, and has a laterally extending portion overlying a zone where there are a pair of microswitches to ensure that the pile, even when only one sheet is left, engages the switches to signal the processing-machine that the feeder is ready for use. The plate is cut away so as not to itself engage the switches when the pile is exhausted.
