Abstract

1427357 Feeding sheets XEROX CORP 1 March 1973 9981/73 Heading B8R In a method of separating sheets from the top of a pile, an intermediate portion of the uppermost sheet is engaged with a contact surface such that (a) a wave is caused to travel towards the leading edge of the sheet and (b) a force to cause advance is imparted to the sheet. Sheets 40 are separated from the top of a pile 41 by rotatable friction rollers 33 brought successively into engagement with the pile by rotation of a spider 32 about an axis 35. The spider is mounted for pivotal movement about an axis 38 and is biased into contact with the pile by a spring 39. Prevention of multiple feed is by means of pressing foot 82. In a second embodiment the individual rollers 33 and the spider are replaced by a cam-like member 50, Fig. 2, having a plurality of friction separator surfaces 51. In a third embodiment, Fig. 3, the member 50 of Fig. 2 is replaced by a roller 90 bearing helical friction surfaces 91 and 92.
