Abstract

1517609 Coating with Pt metals NIHON KOGYO KK 20 Oct 1976 [21 Oct 1975] 43474/76 Heading C7F In the coating of substrates with one or more Pt group metals, an aqueous composition comprising at least one Pt group metal compound containing a radical selected from NO, NO 2 , NO 3 , NOCl, and at least one of NH 4 OH, NH 4 NO 3 and NH 4 NO 2 is applied to the substrate, dried, and thermally decomposed at 160‹-300‹C. The process may be repeated to give a thicker deposit, compounds of two Pt group metals may be used to give a mixed or alloy deposit, or the process may be repeated with different compounds to give a multi-layer structure. The composition may be applied as a solution or paste, and suitable substrates include Ti, Zr, Ta, Ni, Cr, Mo, Fe, steel, stainless steel and Cu. Examples relate to the deposition of Pt from Pt(NH 3 ) 2 (NO 2 ) 2 , Pd from Pd(NH 3 ) 4 (NO 3 ) 2 , Ru from Ru(NO)(OH) 3 , Rh from (NH 4 ) 2 Rh(NO 2 ) 2 , Pd-Os from Pd(NH 3 ) 2 (NO 2 ) 2 and OsO(NO)OH, Ir-Pt from (NH 4 ) 3 Ir(NO 2 ) 6 and Pt(NH 3 ) 2 (NO 2 ) 2 , and to successive coats of Pd and Ru from Pd(NH 3 ) 4 (NO 3 ) 2 and (NH 4 ) 2 Rh(NO 2 ) 2 respectively, all compositions including NH 4 OH solution, some additionally containing NH 4 NO 3 , the exemplified substrate being Ti. Other suitable compounds are Pd(NO 3 ) 2 , (NH 4 ) 3 Ru(NO 2 ) 6 , and Rh(NO 3 ) 2 2H 2 O. The coated substrate may be subsequently annealed.
