1517031 Machine for closing bags THURNE ENG CO Ltd 30 Jan 1976 [27 Feb 1975] 8289/75 Addition to 1381871 Heading B8C A machine for gathering the open ends of bags and securing the gathered ends by lengths of pressure sensitive adhesive tape 14, comprises guides 7, 8 between which the open ends of successive bags are moved through the machine, and a member 9 and (10) Fig. 2 (not shown) which follows each bag along the guides at a greater speed than that of the bag so that it gathers the open end of the bag and pushes the gathered end firstly against a length of the adhesive tape 14 held across the path of the bag and thereafter against cam surfaces 15 on a pair of pivoted fingers 12 which include openings 13 through which the adheive tape 14 passes, to wrap the adhesive tape around the gathered end. The fingers 12 are each supported by a respective parallelogram linkage 22, 24, 27 and 23, 25, 28. The adhesive tape 14 is drawn from a reel 29 by reciprocating grippers 21 which are movable through the openings 13 in the fingers 12. Lengths of non-adhesive strip 31 are applied to the adhesive tape 14 at spaced intervals and a cutter 20 is arranged to cut through the middle of a non-adhesive strip length on the tape 14 as the tape is clamped around the gathered bag end. A printing device may print on the adhesive tape 14. The open end of each bag is flattened by rotating brushes 1, 2 prior to being delivered between the guides 7, 8 by a pair of belts 5, 6. The bags may be carried on a conveyer belt during movement of their open ends through the machine.
