Abstract

1516499 Tying bag necks; labelling THURNE ENG CO Ltd 16 Feb 1976 [18 Feb 1975] 6834/75 Headings B8C and B8F A machine for tying bags comprises one carrier for holding a reel 13 of pressure sensitive adhesive tape 10, a mechanism for applying a tie of the adhesive tape to a gathered bag neck, and a marking head 14 to mark the tape with information. The marking head may have a heated type face reciprocable against the tape to transfer a pigmented polymer coating from a foil 17 to the tape. Alternatively the marking may be by punching or embossing. The tape may have layers of two different colours, the lower colour showing through the upper layer at the points of embossment. A bag neck may be closed by conveying belts 3, 4 while a reciprocable member 5 moving faster than the belts gathers the bag neck and feeds it against the tape 10 and between fingers 6, 7 carried by parallelogram linkages. The fingers push the tape around the neck and adhere the tape to itself. A knife 11 severs the tape and grippers 12 feed a fresh length through apertures 9 in the fingers. Short lengths of paper tape 24 may be applied to the adhesive tape to provide paper tabs at the ends of the adhesive tape tie. Alternatively a bag neck may be gathered by an operator, or a pair of adhesive tapes may be used to form the tie.
