Abstract

1516386 Snap-on covers; piercing inner lid SCHMALBACH-LUBECA GmbH 17 Sept 1975 [18 Sept 1974] 38137/75 Heading B8T A plastics snap-on cover 5 having a top portion and a skirt portion 6 which in use snaps over a circumferential bead 3 on a tin 1, is provided with a protuberance or extension 9 concentrically on the top portion, and with a supporting device, e.g. annulus 10, radially spaced from the protuberance, the protuberance 9 and supporting device 10 being integrally formed on the cover. The cover 5 is provided initially as an over-cap on a container for materials packed at reduced pressure and then subjected to excess pressure, e.g. powdered coffee. Such containers 1 have a tear-off lid 2 defined by a score line, and a pre-weakened region 4 to form a ventilating opening, said region 4 being aligned with the protuberance 9. In use the supporting device 10 retains the top portion of the cover spaced from the lid 2 of the container until pressure is exerted above the protuberance to cause the protuberance to engage and open the region 4. The protuberance 9 is preferably frustoconical with a flattened or radiussed tip and the moulding pip of the cover is preferably situated on the top portion opposite the tip of the protuberance 9. The moulding pip is preferably located in a recess in the top portion. The supporting device may be a continuous annular bead or web or discontinuous formed of three or more spaced segments. The annulus may be cylindrical or tapered outwardly away from the top portion.
