Abstract

1514936 Metal beams and columns; Handrails M H BRIGGS 1 Sept 1975 [19 Aug 1974] 36370/74 Headings E1B and E1K A constructional beam or column of cold formed steel comprises an elongate first section 12 of channel form having a web 13 and two flanges, the free edge of each flange having an inwardly bent lip 15 making an angle with the flange of no more than 90‹, on one or more clip sections 17 each having a web with at each side an inwardly extending clip arm 20 making an acute angle with the web and having an end portion bent outwardly to define a groove and dimensioned so as to be a clip fit to the first section so as to provide a closed box structure. The clip arms may be extended 23 beyond the groove normal to the web and turned inwardly or outwardly 25 to transfer load to provide added strength. A clip section may be attached to a post (41, Figs. 9 and 10 not shown) to support a first section as a hand-rail (40).
