Abstract

Magneto-electric machines.-A magneto for igniting an internal-combustion engine consists of a permanently-magnetized steel disk e with opposite faces of North and South polarity and two sets of armature coils f, either the coils or the disk being mounted on a rotatable shaft a driven from the crank-shaft of the engine. The coils fare connected electrically to a cam or wiper i which engages a plunger j, the spark being produced between the plunger and a friction point k on the piston head, or in the combustion chamber. The make-and-break contacts are protected from the exhaust gases by means of a screen m made of magnetized steel wire.
