Abstract

151,195. Alexander, A. E., (Stokes & Smith Co.). Jan. 14, 1920. Machines for assembling box bodies and necks. A machine for pressing the necks of necked box-bodies into position comprises a table e or support 13, mounted in an approximately vertical position and carrying a pair of pressers each comprising a former 38, upon which the box body with the glued neck inserted is placed, and four pressing-blocks 14, which are simultaneously advanced to clamp the neck into position within the body upon the former or retracted to allow the pressed box to be pushed off the former by an ejector plate 40; the pair of pressers work alternately, so that while the blocks of one presser are being advanced those of the adjacent presser are being retracted. Each block 14, preferably faced with a pad 15, is adjustably fixed by a screw 17 in a clamp 16 resiliently and adjustably mounted in a carrier head 21 by a pair of studs 18 fixed in the clamp. Enlarged heads on the studs are enclosed in recesses in the carrier head and engage springs arranged in the recesses between the heads of the studs and adjustable screw plugs 23. Each head 21 is adjustably fixed by a bolt 25 in a slide 24 mounted in ways 27 removably mounted on the table 13, and each set of slides is reciprocated in the ways by a grooved cam 32 engaging rollers 30 on studs 29 carried by the slides. The cams carrv wheels 35 gearing with worms on a shaft 56, preferably driven from a motor. The ejector plates 40 are carried by rods 39 passing through the formers and cam shafts 33, and are operated by links and levers 42, 41 and rods 53 from cams 50 geared to the cams 32. Each cam 50 has a depression 52, which, when the blocks 14 are retracted, allows a spring 55 to project the plate from the former and,push the pressed box on to a conveyer 68, by which the boxes are taken from the machine. A board 82 directs the ejected boxes on to the conveyer, which is driven by gearing from the shaft 56.
