Apparatus for covering formed or stayed boxes or for forming blanks into boxes and covering them of the type having a number of tooloperating units adjustable upon a support to provide for boxes of different dimensions, has each unit provided with a cam which positively actuates the box-covering tool both for advance and return. As shown, the apparatus comprises four units 1, 2 arranged mutually at right angles and individually adjustable to and from the platen 5 along ways in the support 3, the cams of the units being geared to elongated pinions 16, 16a on shafts 17, 17<a> geared to vertical shafts driven by the means actuating the mechanism for operating the form-blocks 9, 10; each cam is unidirectional and in the form of a barrel or cylinder having one or more cam slots engaging tooloperating followers moving axially of the cam. Each unit may have a single cam actuating followers on slides carrying the forming and coverapplying tools and the slides may be arranged above or above and below the cam; as shown in Fig. 3, the units 1 have each two cams 12, 24 geared together, and each actuating two followers and. slides carrying the forming and cover-applying tools. The cam 12 actuates the slide 30 carrying the brush members 42 and smoothing rollers 40 for applying the side flaps of the cover blank to the box and the slide 47 carrying the corner-lap fingers 55 for folding the extensions of the side flaps on to the ends of the box while the cam 24 actuates the slide 62 carrying the fingers 66 for turning in the projecting edges of the cover blank horizontally over the top edges of the box and the slide by carrying the devices 80 for applying pressure to the sides of the box. The cam of each 'unit 2 actuates three slides carrying the brush members and smoothing rollers, the turn-in fingers. and the presser devices for the ends of the box. The brush members 42 of each unit are pivoted above the roller 40 to brackets 44 on a member 31 which is carried by the slide 30 and has end supports for shafts 33 carrying the roller shaft 38; adjustable springs are arranged in the end supports 32 and resiliently oppose inward movement of the roller. The ribbed corner-lap fingers 55 are carried in brackets 52 hinged to brackets 49 and controlled by springs 57, the brackets 49 being adjustable longitudinally on a bar 48 arranged transerselv on the slide 47; the fingers 66 are clamped on a bar 63 arranged transversely on the slide 62. The presser block 80 is faced with felt 82, &c. and is clamped in a slot in a bar 72 carrying pins 71 slidable in holes in the slide 69 and controlled by springs connected to the slide and pulling the bar against the ends of rods 77 slidable in threaded sleeves disposed in recesses in the slide; by rotating the heads 79 of the rods the stops may be independently adjusted independentlv of springs which engage, the sleeves and exert equal force in opposition to the thrust of the bar 72. The members 31 carrying the rollers and brush members of the units operating upon the ends of the box may be pivoted in the slides 30. Specification 19967/01 is referred to.
