Abstract

Dash-pots.-A dash-pot for damping axial vibrations in a rotating member comprises a cylinder fitted with a piston formed in two parts, which are held in engagement with, and on opposite sides of, a collar upon the rotating member by the pressure of fluid within the cylinder. As shown, the piston comprises two disks 11, 12 engaging the collar 7 on the rotating shaft 6. The fluid, preperably oil, is supplied through non-return valves 24, 25 to the chambers 18, 19, and from the chamber 19 part of the fluid enters the annular space 37 through openings 36, thereby relieving to some extent the pressure on the collar 7. Bolts 34 and springs 35 also form a yielding connexion between disks 11, 12. To minimize leakage, yielding packings-rings 29 carried by the piston slide axially in the cylinder, similar rings 33 being fitted on the end walls of chambers 18, 19. A drain reservoir 38 with an opening closed by a plug 39 is provided in the end wall 17. The dash-pot is particularly intended for use with radial-flow turbines having oppositely rotating wheels.
