Abstract

1509431 Suspensions H N K PATON and J B SKILLING 18 March 1975 [3 April 1974 (2)] 11184/75 Heading F2S [Also in Division B7] A suspension system, particularly for rail vehicles, includes elastomeric rod springs 84-86 and damping means arranged between the vehicle frame and running gear. A rail vehicle has two interconnected side frames 50 mounting housings 82 and axles 2 supported in adapters 93. Elastomeric rod springs 84-86 and spacers plates 87, 88, 90 are arranged on an elastomer pad 91 of the adapter, each spring having longitudinal bearing surfaces, e.g. flats, and being free to bulge at unloaded surfaces. The springs may have projections for engaging apertures in the spacer plates. Damping action is provided by friction surfaces 98 of pistons 99 engaging the inclined surfaces of housing 82, the pistons being urged inwardly against further rod springs 96. In a further arrangement, Fig. 11, the damping pistons 163 may be pivoted at 165 to effect better frictional contact. Other arrangements and shapes of rod springs are disclosed. The vehicle body is mounted on the frame by a bolster 16 pivoted to a frame cross member 54. Each side frame 50 has a continuous contact bearing 53 supporting the bolster ends for allowing omni-directional movement thereon. The bearing includes a hemi-spherical lower bearing member 53a which supports an antifriction floating member 53c whose upper surface bears against an upper bearing member 53c. The subject-matter of Specifications divided numbers 1,509,432 and 1,509,433 is also disclosed.
