Abstract

1508123 Carboxyalkylation of cross-linked starch derivatives UNILEVER Ltd 18 March 1975 [19 Dec 1973] 58917/73 Addition to 1508570 Heading C3U A process for the carboxyalkylation of a cross-linked starch derivative comprises carboxyalkylating a cross-linked starch having a water swelling volume of 5-25 ml./g. to an actual degree of substitution of from 0À1 to 0À8 to provide a carboxyalkylated starch having a water regain of greater than 10 ml./g. Preferably the carboxyalkylating agent is chloracetic acid/sodium hydroxide. The product is useful for absorbing large quantities of water and urine and is prepared by applying a mixture of starch granules, water and a crosslinking agent as a thin film to a heated surface to effect granule rupture and then crosslinking as above.
