A bath for the electrolytic removal of metals which usually are coating metals such as Ni, Cr, Zn, Sn, Cu, Cd or Ag from steel surfaces contains in aqueous solution nitric acid and/or its salts with inorganic and/or organic bases, further contains organic acids and/or their salts, and a water-soluble iodine compound and additionally a further halogen compound in the form of a soluble chlorine compound.
