Abstract

1503915 PTFE diaphragms IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 14 May 1975 [24 May 1974(2)] 23275/74 and 23316/74 Heading C7B [Also in Divisions C3 and H1] The diaphragm in an electrolytic cell, fuel cell or battery comprises a porous PTFE material characterized by a microstructure of nodes interconnected by fibrils such as described and claimed in Specification 1355373. The diaphragm may be filled with a non-removable inert material either before or after rendering porous. In the latter case the diaphragm is either agitated in a suspension of filler e.g. TiO 2 or ZrO 2 or is impregnated with a filler precursor e.g. TiCl 4 , Zr(OCl) 2 or (C 4 H 9 ) 4 TiO 4 which is thereafter hydrolyzed. The diaphragm may be treated before use in a cell using successive washes of NaOH, HCl and NaH 2 PO 4 . Specified electrolytic processes are chlor-alkali electrolysis and olefin oxidations.
