1503514 Laminated electrolysis diaphragm IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 6 May 1975 [25 June 1974] 28114/74 Heading C7B [Also in Division B5] A method of manufacturing a porous diaphragm comprising a polypropylene gauze bonded to a porous sheet of polytetrafluorethylene comprises the steps of coating the gauze and/or a sheet of polytetrafluoroethylene with an aqueous dispersion of polytetrafluoroethylene and bringing the gauze and the sheet together under pressure. The polytetrafluoroethylene sheet used may be porous; alternatively it may contain a solid particulate material e.g. starch or calcium carbonate which is subsequently removed by an acid e.g. hydrochloric acid. The diaphragm may be used in an electrolytic cell for the electrolysis of alkali metal chloride solutions.
